Trial ran about nine weeks in 2023. On August 5, 2024, he issued the liability memorandum opinion, reported as 747 F. Supp. 3d 1.
The opinion concludes that Google violated Section 2 of the Sherman Act — the federal monopolization statute — by maintaining a monopoly in general search services and general search text advertising through exclusionary distribution agreements. Epoch Times and Just the News quoted the line: “Google is a monopolist, and it has acted as one to maintain its monopoly.” A liability finding is not a breakup order. Remedies came later.
The original complaint was filed during the first Trump administration. That filing date is docket history. It is not a finding that Mehta was implementing a Trump enforcement plan.
